Our small businesses across Williamsburg are the backbone of our strength in the regional economy. I’ve done work for multiple small female-owned and family-owned businesses and worked with Three Sisters, a small boutique in Williamsburg.
To support current small business owners, I’d expand tax incentives in the city, expand special use zoning for small businesses, and increase communication between the city and small business owners about local permitting procedures.
The City’s Feasibility study made it clear that there are significant disparities in test scores and educational outcomes for students in Williamsburg and their other local counterparts. Whether the solution is an independent school system or increased k-12 funding under the current system, as a city councilor, I’d ensure we fully fund our schools and do right by Williamsburg parents, students, and teachers.
As a student, I’d make it one of my top priorities to incentivize more William and Mary students to work and raise a family here in Williamsburg City. If elected to City Council, I would ensure our tax rate remains one of the lowest in the state and explore more ways to incentivize businesses to come to Williamsburg and hire locals.
Furthermore, I am a strong advocate for the growth of our tourism and hospitality industry. I believe that by supporting initiatives like the new sports complex, we can attract more visitors and boost our local economy.
The walkability of the Merchant’s Square area contributes so much to the city's character. I’d support the idea of closing off streets for events in Colonial Williamsburg, and I’d explore the idea of creating new bypasses to redirect traffic away from main pedestrian areas in Williamsburg. And wherever feasible, I’d support expanding sidewalks, crosswalks, and street lighting.
Housing in Williamsburg is too expensive, and residents who have lived here their whole lives should not be forced to move to other localities because they can’t keep up with rising rent costs. As a city councilor, I’d support thoughtful planning that protects the small-town environment and prevents traffic congestion while also trying to expand the city’s limited housing stock to make rents more affordable for all Williamsburg residents, and to make it easier to buy homes in Williamsburg.
During the campaign and as a city council member, I would make every effort to hear from constituents and get community input through regular town halls and constituent meetings. If elected, I’ll answer every constituent's email, text, and voicemail. During my time on the council, I’d make an extra effort to explain current issues under internal discussion and regularly highlight city officials' work.
